This month we are featuring

Nick DeWolf as our guest Author.

A little bit about Nick DeWolf -

Someone once described me as, "just humble enough to not be overly confident." I use a lot of self-deprecating humor.  It took me three tries to spell deprecating right just now.  I can type over 100 words a minute, but struggle for days on a single paragraph.  No, I've spent a whole week stuck on a sentence just to end up cutting it during editing.  I tend to write one book at a time, though my mind is always percolating with the next tale.  I dream a lot.  Most of my stories come from dreams, born from somewhere deep inside me, a place that even I'm a little afraid to go.  I hesitate too much.  As long as I can remember, I've had anxiety.  I worry.  I've worried myself sick. I've gotten better about it over the years, to the point where lots of people are surprised to hear it.  And that makes me laugh inside, because it feels so obvious to me.

Q1. In terms of the work you do, what aspects are you most passionate about? Why?

A1. Timing. Pacing. The speed of a sentence. Is it driving? Does it just drag on, and on, and on?  It's more than just storytelling; it's music you can make in the reader's mind.  Writing isn't just about what happened, who said what, where they went and how things looked. It's a painting you tell. It's alive. It's art. It's interpreted differently by everyone, and so no two perspectives will ever be the same. That's fascinating to me.

Q2. What do you consider some of your biggest professional and personal accomplishments? How did your attributes contribute to those accomplishments?

A2. My short story, RUSTY'S RUN, made my mom cry. Like, big cry. Ugly cry. A third a box of tissues kind of crying. This is probably the greatest thing that's ever happened to me.  Which, now that read that last sentence aloud, makes me sound like a terrible human being.  So, I'm going to say that the attribute which contributed to it the most was me being a terrible human being.

Q3. What is your dream for the future?

A3. One day, I'll be riding in a car. My phone will buzz. Pulling it out of my pocket, I'll check the text messages. My partner will look at me and say, "work stuff?" I'll sigh, maybe roll my eyes, and say, "yeah." But instead of talking about how I need to go home and adjust a spreadsheet to resubmit for invoicing, I'll say, "Quentin Tarantino wants to go over the script... again... and see if we can make some changes." And she'll say, "Dude, he needs to stop messing with the story. It's fine." And I'll say, "I know." Then, she'll huff and squirm, like her seat suddenly got a little too hot for her. "Is he still trying to fit a samurai sword in there somewhere?" Sheepishly, I'll go, "yeah," and before I can continue, she'll grunt. "Ugh." And I'll just agree, silently.
