Welcome to the 3rd Meet The Author Q&A!!
This month we are featuring Jo Merrett as our guest Author.
I am a married mum of two (aged 12 and 14, one of each) who lives
in the south of England not far from London. I work part time as a
social media manager for the fresh produce company my husband is a
director for and run the family, work out like a demon and write and
paint the rest of the time.
I was formerly a
feature writer for the national newspaper, The Mirror, but left to have
my daughter. This novel is my first, but I have almost finished my second
and have plans for several more.

Q1. In terms of the work you do, what aspects are you most passionate about? Why?
A1. Some readers might love her. It all depends from what stance you
come from. I think a lot of people see things in one dimension: someone
is bad, good, moral, immoral, yet good people can make bad decisions,
and making mistakes are a part of growing up and developing your own
character. Other people might view the character's behavior as right or
wrong because society dictates it, yet bias is all around us and its
good to challenge that viewpoint or otherwise nothing changes.
Q2. What do you consider some of your biggest professional and personal accomplishments? How did your attributes contribute to those accomplishments?
A2. Professionally, becoming a journalist and feature writer at a
national level was something I was immensely proud of, and now having
written and had published a novel, gives me great fulfillment.
In
all aspects, both personal and professional, my drive and determination
were key to achieving. I don't come from a privileged background with
contacts, just a loving family who supported me. So it took personal
self-belief and commitment to see it through. I was rejected 50 times
when I applied to become a trainee journalist but I knew I could do it
so just kept going. My first editor, Adrian Seal just saw that drive and
believed in me and I'm eternally grateful he gave me that chance.
I
was also knocked back by agents but kept on going as as I knew I'd
written a book some people could enjoy and wanted to get it out there.
My children have been an absolute challenge, as every parent will
testify, and despite mental health issues, my intent to become strong
(not skinny) took that same drive and single-mindedness.
Q3. What is your dream for the future?
A3. I would love to find a publisher for this second novel and have a
couple of ideas for screenplays I want to get off the ground: too many
projects not enough hours in the day!
